Keith Haring

Keith Allen Haring was an American artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s by expressing concepts of birth, death, sexuality, and war.

The Keith Haring Foundation was established shortly before he died to do three things:
  1. to preserve and exhibit his artwork.
  2. to provide support to not-for-profit organizations that assist children, as well as organizations involved in education, research and care related to HIV and AIDS.
  3. to be a source of accurate information about his life and work.

Street life in New York City, drugs, nuclear weapons, AIDS, apartheid... no topic was off limits to Haring, who made social activism a central component of his artistic career.

Haring's populist attitude was central to both his imagery and the way it was distributed. He opened his Pop Shop in 1986 to make his images more accessible to the public.


Haring died on on February 16 1990 of AIDS related complications. He dedicated a large part of his art  work and dedication to supporting foundation such as his own in finding a cure for AIDS and for AIDS related relief in countries including Africa. Many organisations and some musical groups have used Haring's art to promote AIDS prevention all over the world.
